Designing systems for Food and Health Tech businesses.
e4i, (Empathy 4 Impact) is a design studio that helps climate and health businesses in creating systems and systems components (services and products). e4i comes in to design digital products, all types of services and systems that will help businesses and organizations make informed decisions about the impact they are making from a system standpoint. As our world begins to feel the impact of climate change and decline in our health , we must ask ourselves, how we can create a world that is more sustainable, circular, inclusive and equitable that is better for our world and all living things. Everything in this world is created by design. The way our natural systems work, man-made systems/processes that we have built, to products and services we use everyday. e4i believes that if we start to design systems, services and products that work within our natural systems that are circular and sustainable we will not only make our planet healthier but also make us healthier too.
Rather you see it or not, everything we do in our daily lives involves a system. In our daily lives, we have a personal system, health system and/or work system and many other systems that make up our day and our lives. We are also part of systems, as family members, employees, citizens, as human beings. Majority of the services and products (part of systems) we have today do not account for the environment, Earth’s natural systems or life-centered equity. e4i wants to change that and start designing services and products that are part of a system that accounts for our planet, Earth’s systems and life equity.
Our goal in helping Food technology organizations is to help with bringing quality, sustainable and healthy farming practices mainstream and be part of the bigger system on how food is produced. Soil health is the single most important part of producing our foods. If soil’s health is poor, farmers are less likely to grow food, moreover, produce less quality, nutrient filled food. Food waste is also a sub-sector we help food organizations with creating design solutions for. Food waste is an issue that should not exist in the first place. A third of the global population is going hungry and we need solutions to avoid food waste or redistribute food so that it does not end up in the landfills or go to waste.
The issues e4i focuses on in the health sector is the following: Design solutions that focus on service experience in the clinics, hospitals settings. Design products that help with service experience.
Areas of focus in the biotech sector for e4i involves: nutritional healthcare, preventative healthcare and wellness. e4i helps biotech organizations that focus on bringing a shift to preventative healthcare first instead of treating when symptoms arise. If healthcare providers can look at the entire biological system from molecular level to nutritional level to help them make informative decisions on patient healthcare plans, we would have a healthier population and healthier planet.

When designing systems, services or products, research is an integral part of the process. Conducting Research as part of the design process, allows the organization to gain clarity, empathy and challenge pre-existing biases you may have. Research allows you to see any gaps within your system, services or products and helps you understand your customers’ needs, wants, gains and pain points. Designing without research is like going to the doctors’ office without seeing a doctor and going straight to getting surgery. There needs to be feedback, or have guidelines of some sort in order to build or design something that not only helps your organization bring value to your customers but also how your services or products fit into the bigger system. e4i conducts many research categories like the following: User Research, System Research, Market Research, Product Research, Service Research.
The heart of e4i is problem solving. Everything we do is how we solve the best and correct problem for your organization. Through design thinking, life-centered principles and system thinking principles, we help create design solutions for your organization that are the most efficient and appropriate for your services or products. The design solutions we come up with will take into account how your service or product you provide works within the food or healthcare system. With each design solution we ask” how is this solution sustainable, inclusive, equitable and circular.
If you think e4i can help you with your design challenge, we would like to speak with you and see if we can work together in tackling the challenge. It will take all of us to reduce the affects of climate change and e4i believes that it is better to work together and than work alone.
Let's get to work!!!!
